i-Security and Check Point successfully implemented in a world-renown international Petroleum provider in Guangzhou

This international petroleum company broke new ground, entering the market in the People's Republic of China in 1999. As the largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) importer in China , its business covers production, distribution, and sale of oil, natural gas, and other industrial chemicals such as ethylene.

Headquartered in Guangzhou , the global petroleum company has offices in Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Liaoning provinces. The office in Liaoning province operates 113 gas stations. The Zhuhai office, an LPG provider in the local market, manages a supply chain of distributors and customers. The Hong Kong office, which supplies fuel to power plants for electricity generation, settles accounts with its customers and manages the supply chain online.

Because network communication became increasingly important for business, the company wanted to construct a secure environment for information access to prevent internal and external threats. Specifically, the company's security challenges were to

  • Provide the four regional offices with secure access to the Internet without using costly dedicated circuits
  • Connect the regional offices and 113 gas stations POS to corporate information systems securely and efficiently
  • Securely connect with business partners
  • Provide authorized employees with secure access to corporate resources while on the road
  • Ensure a reliable ISP link for continuity of Internet- and intranet-based business flows

i-Security partnered with Check PointR, with its OPSEC, supplied this petroleum company with an integrated solution to ensure network security. The solution consists of Check Point's VPN-1R Pro® software on i-Security SP-4500 and i-Security SP-4032 security platforms.

The i-Security hardware features hot-swappable power supplies, disk mirroring, and port redundancy to prevent service interruption due to hardware failure. It runs Check Point's hardened operating system, SecurePlatform™. Check Point's VPN-1 Pro includes centralized security management, advanced attack protection, and traffic-shaping technologies.

At Guangzhou headquarters, a VPN-1 gateway provides secure network access for branches, partners, and traveling employees. The gateway is deployed with two i-Security SP-4500 security platforms with a dual ISP Internet connection, providing a secure, reliable, and stable e-commerce platform for the company. VPN-1 gateways are also deployed at all the branch offices on i-Security SP-4032 platforms. All offices are linked securely over the Internet via site-to-site VPNs, eliminating the need for costly dedicated circuits. Check Point's intelligent INSPECT™ detection technology ensures the privacy of Web-based business communications and prevents unauthorized access.

All 113 gas stations connect to the Liaoning office via secure VPN channels.

The Check Point security management architecture, SMART, allows easy, centralized management of firewall and VPN policies. Headquarters and branch-office firewalls and the entire VPN topology are centrally managed with SmartCenter™ at the headquarters. The company doesn't have to station security administrators at every location in China .

The i-Security SP-4500, integrated with Check Point's latest VPN-1 version, offers excellent attack protection, strict access control, large-scale centralized management capabilities, and detailed system log capabilities.
